F.O.Y. is in the house!

Hi! My name is Shellane Demarest, aka F.O.Y. Fountain of Youth. You may ask why I am called that. Well at the age of 46, I’ve done more in the last two years than in my whole life. Or at least it seems that way. From 1999 to 2012, I taught various classes. From Les Mills classes (BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, CXWORX to name a few) to bootcamps and pilates I thought I did it all. I’ve also been featured in three fitness dvd’s and a couple of modeling assignments. I thought I was living it up!  On May 23rd, it all changed.

I ripped the mensicus in my left knee while teaching a class. I assumed my teaching career was over. However,  God saw a different plan for me. After much prayer, proper nutrition and physical therapy, I healed in three months. I decided to pursue all of the things I said I wanted to do. There was no more wishing. I was going to do it! First,  I decided to run a 5k. It would have been my  first 5k since the procedure. Did it AND beat my previous time. Hmm, what else is was on my list? I remembered I always wanted to compete in bodybuilding shows. So, without hesitation I  registered with the NPC and competed in the Masters Figure Division. I did 4 shows and always placed somewhere between 3rd and 7th place. Not terrible, but not exactly good either. I didn’t want to be mediocre.  The NPC judges feedback was in order to place better, I had to really work on my lat spread and my “glute/hamstring tie in” area.  It was like a broken record. My previous coaches suggested various exercises like sled runs, flipping tires, pull ups and sprints. Ugh, I knew I would not do those things consistently on my own. One day, I glanced over my shoulder and watched the CrossFit RSX box during one of their WOD’s at my personal training studio, Fitness Xperts. I was amazed at what they were doing. They did all of the things my coaches told me to do and then some! I started to attend their classes and realized I was actually good at this! I began attending these WOD’s everyday. Soon, I realized this new phenomena called CrossFit was a family, not a fad. We compete in 5k’s together. We attend each other’s birthday parties, etc. There is a strong bond built within this affliation, so much different than in bodybuilding. Don’t get me wrong, I still love bodybuilding and will still compete next year as well. But I have discovered a new love! Nothing subjective here, you either did the rep or you didn’t. Simple as that!

What’s next on my “to do” list? Two competitions in 2013. First Wodapalooza in Miami, Jan  19-20, 2013 and The Caution Games in Hialeah Gardens, Feb 9th, 2013.  This is all so new but I am loving it. So much that I decided to blog about my journey. There will be some highs and lows I am sure but I know these are all God’s steps.
